In China

  • AB first appointed on Oct. 26, 1861, 1861 (咸丰十一年) 10.26 首任 (参考:清季中外使领年表, 故宫博物院明清档案部与福建师范大学历史系合编,中华书局出版 P.60)
  • AB arrival in Hong Kong (Oct, 1861), in Shanghai around Dec 1961
  • Taiping Rebels in Ningpo and subsequent Concession Dispute Dec 1961- Jan 1862
  • AB Arrived in Beijing on July 20 1862, 同治元年 7.20到京
  • Visit to Prince Kung for an interview, and present his credentials, between July 24 (AB letter to Prince Kung) – Aug 23, 1862 (AB letter to Seward reporting the meet)
  • Burgevine succeeded Ward as the leader of the Ever-Victorious Army at AB’s suggestion, Sept 1861 (he later desert to rebels),
  • AB mitigate the dispute about Lay-Osborn flotilla (Lay was dismissed from Customs and Robert Hart is appointed as Inspector General) 1863
  • 1865 before AB left for vacation in US, he told Tsung Li Yamen that a mission to the west is the only solution for China.
  • AB left for vacation on May 12, 1865, S. Wells Williams (his deputy embassador) subsituted for him 同治四年 5.12卸任, 威廉士(原副使)同日署
  • AB came back to Beijing on 11.2, 1866. 同治五年11.2. 蒲安臣回任,威廉士卸任
  • AB resigned on 11.21, 1867. S. Wells Williams took his position on the same day, who ended his term on 9.29, 1868. J. Ross Brown replaced him. 同治六年11.21卸任,同日威廉士署。其于同治七年9.29卸任,同月劳文罗斯接任

On mission:

  • 2/25/1868 Shanghai, China, took boat to the U.S. by way of Japan
  • 4/1/1868 arrived in San Francisco and warmly welcomed. Welcoming parties lasted for more than a month
  • 4/29/1868 San Francisco Governor welcomed AB and hosted a big party of 400 people. AB made speech at the party, telling the audience about the improvements of China
  • 5/23/1868 Arrived in New York. AB and his delegation took the boat by way of Panama Canal and arrived in the East Coast of the U.S.
  • 6/2/1868 Arrived in D.C.
  • 6/3/1868 D.C. visited State Secretary Seward
  • 6/6/1868 D.C. Visited U.S. President Andrew Johnson
  • 7/28/1868 D.C. AB signed the Burlingame Treaty with Seward
  • 8/7/1868 New York, AB and his team took the book to cross the Atlantic for the Europe
  • 9/19/1868 Liverpool, UK. Arrived in UK
  • 9/21/1868, arrival in Britain, scant attention paid to the mission, waited for 2 months before presented to the Queen at Windsor. Talked to Lord Clarendon (new Foreign Minister) on 12/26, official statement in a letter from Clarendon states British policy in China (dated 12/28/1868)
  • 11/20/1868 arrived at Windsor Castle (温莎城堡) to meet with Queen Victoria
  • 12/2/1868 London AB and Zhi Gang visited British Foreign Secretary Lord Clarendon 英国新外相克莱登
  • 12/28/1868 London The Foreign Ministry made an announcement to respect Chinese territory and to solve issues with peaceful approach

  • 1/2/1869 Paris Delegation started its 8 months journey in France
  • 1/20/1869 Paris visited Foreign Minister
  • 1/24/1869 Paris Visited French King Napoleon III
  • Feb to Sept, 1869 Paris the delegation waited for 6 months but in the end, the French Government didn’t make any announcement in favor of the British annoucement. Members from the delegation met various officials during the period
  • Prince Kung wrote to AB about waiting till mission’s finished to exchange ratification of treaty, 9/3/1869
  • 9/27/1869 Arrived in Stockholm, Sweden
  • 10/1/1869 Stockholm, Visited the King of Sweden
  • 10/11/1869 Stockholm, started the visit with various officials
  • 10/18/1869 Copenhagen, Denmark, Visited Denmark’s President
  • 10/30/1869 Hague, Holland
  • 11/11/1869 Hague, visited the King of Netherlands
  • 11/20/1869 Berlin, Prussia
  • 12/2/1869 Berlin visited the Prussia King William
  • 1/3/1870 Berlin visited Prime Minster and Foreign Minister Otto Bismarck (普鲁士宰相兼外长俾斯麦), well received in Berlin
  • 1/4/1870 Berlin Bismarck made announcement to respect the Chinese territory and maintain friendship with China
  • 1/31/1870 Berlin Left Prussia for Russia
  • 2/2/1870 St. Petersburg, Russia Started conversation with the Foreign Minister of Russia
  • 2/16/1870 St. Petersburg Visited Russia Tsar Alexander II (俄国沙皇亚历山大二世), Grand reception at Winter Palace soon after his arrival, hopeful of a new treaty
  • 2/23/1870 St. Petersburg AB died from pneumonia
  • 3/2/1870 St. Petersburg Zhi Gang started the conversation with the Foreign Minster of Russia on the bilaterial issues
  • 4/26/1870 Arrived in Brussels, Belgium
